Jeep Trail Rated Badge
A Jeep Trail Rated® model has been tested to take on the toughest terrain and unpredictable conditions. But the Jeep Trail Rated Badge is never just given to a Jeep Brand vehicle, it is earned. To earn a Jeep Trail Rated Badge, the vehicle must be capable of passing a series of intense tests to prove its ability to withstand tough terrain, harsh conditions, and inclement weather. The Jeeps go through a test that consists of five categories. A trail rated Jeep has to succeed against these five categories: Traction, Water Fording, Maneuverability, Articulation, and Ground Clearance. Keep reading to learn more about each test category and what Jeep models have the honor to be a Jeep Trail Rated model.
Jeep Trail Rated Badge Test
The Jeep will go through a five-category test to get the Jeep Trail Rated Badge. The testing begins in the state-of-the-art facilities at FCA US LLC headquarters before it even reaches the most challenging terrain. It will be tested during the harsh winters in Northern Michigan to the boulders of the Rubicon trail which is located high in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The five categories to earn the Jeep Trail Rated Badge include:
- Ground Clearance- the minimum amount of distance between the bottom of the vehicle body to the ground. Plenty of ground clearance allows you to drive over rocks and logs while helping prevent underbody damage. When the approach angle, break over angle, and departure angle are maximized, it helps you go over in certain situations.
- Water Fording- the ability to go through water. Electrical connections and body openings are sealed, and the air intake is positioned higher to help protect your vehicle when driving through overflowing streams, creeks, and deceivingly deep rainstorm puddles.
- Articulation- the ability of a wheel to travel up or down relative to the wheel on the opposite side of the vehicle. With high levels of articulation, it will help your wheel remain stable and engaged when one or more tires are off the ground. This helps when off-roading or when hitting deep potholes.
- Traction- the function that works to help accelerate and prevent wheel slippage when driving on wet or slippery surfaces. With a good amount of traction, your Jeep can handle some of the harshest, most unpredictable driving conditions. Jeep traction will help you take on snow storms or the toughest terrain.
- Maneuverability- the quality of being easy to move and direct. Jeep's precision steering and optimized wheelbases can handle intense situations on- and off-road.
