What are the Different Jeep 4x4 Systems?

Some of the Jeep models have multiple Jeep 4x4 systems available. The Jeep Wrangler, Grand Cherokee, Cherokee, Compass, and Renegade all have more than one 4x4 system. Some of these systems are Jeep Active Drive, Command-Trac®, Quadra-Trac®, Selec-Trac®, and more. These systems allow you to master any terrain or road condition that comes your way. Jeep Wrangler 4x4 Systems

  • Command-Trac® 4x4 System- is a 4x4 high-range off-paved roads and onto the off-road. Shift back and forth from two-wheel to keep four-wheel high. It delivers a 50/50 split of torque to the front and rear axles for great traction. The four-low range delivers the low-speed power and control that is needed for tough off-road or towing situations. It's a part-time system for all-weather and off-road capability, low-range mode, brake lock differential, and has solid front and rear axles.
  • Rock-Trac® 4x4 System- features 4x4 high and low modes for different situations. High mode for off-paved roads, best used on slippery or loose surfaces like ice, dirt, gravel, or snow-covered roads while in part-time locked mode. Low-mode delivers the low speed required for tough off-road or towing situations. Used in the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon.

Jeep Grand Cherokee 4x4 Systems

  • Quadra-Drive II® 4x4 System w/ Rear Electronic Limited-Slip Differential- full-time 4x4 system that delivers all-weather capabilities by transferring up to 100% of available torque to a single rear wheel if needed.
  • Quadra-Trac I® 4x4 System- system that is always engaged for all-weather capability and peace of mind. Operates in a full-time high-range mode that delivers optimum traction in virtually any driving situation. It gives a balanced torque distribution with a brake lock differential.
  • Quadra-Trac II® 4x4 System- a full-time system that functions in a 4x4 mode until you need more additional traction. Reacts by electronically engaging the clutch pack to transfer up to 100% of the torque to either axle. It works with the brake lock differential and four-wheel brake-traction control systems to deliver confident all-weather traction.
  • Quadra-Trac® SRT® 4x4 System- features a massive mechanical wet clutch and electronic limited slip differential in the rear that allows 100% of the drive torque to be sent out to one rear wheel. Includes Selec-Trac® system (auto, track, sport, snow, tow, and custom). It is a single-speed transfer case, fully automatic and seamless operation, and has a balanced torque distribution with a brake lock differential.

Jeep Cherokee 4x4 System

  • Jeep Active Drive I 4x4 System- features a single power take-off unit that is fully automatic and delivers seamless operation in and out of four-wheel drive at any speed. Selec-terrain traction management system (auto, snow, sport, and sand/mud). Disconnecting the power take-off unit helps maximize fuel efficiency and balance torque distribution with a brake lock differential.
  • Jeep Active Drive II 4x4 System- includes all the features of the Jeep Active Drive I 4x4 System and adds a low range and neutral mode for added capability. The 4x4 low mode is good for extra low-speed traction and neutral mode enables available flat towing behind an RV. The 4-low mode locks front and rear drive shafts for low-speed power for rock crawling and towing.
  • Jeep Active Drive Lock System- includes all the features of the Active Drive II but this one includes a mechanical rear axle lock and exclusive Selec-terrain traction management rock mode. Selec-speed control with hill ascent and hill descent control is also featured. This system is present on the Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk.

Jeep Compass 4x4 Systems

  • Jeep Active Drive 4x4 System- allows the driver to choose from up to four on- and off-road modes to tackle a variety of surfaces. Fully automatic and seamless operation in and out of 4x4 and includes Selec-Terrain with hill descent control and four modes: auto, snow, sand, and mud.
  • Jeep Active Drive Low 4x4 System- on Trailhawk models. Five modes: auto, snow, sand, mud, and rock. 4-low mode optimizes powertrain and driveline behavior for maximized off-road and towing capability.
